Groundhog Day at The Medicine Park Aquarium & Natural Sciences Center
The Medicine Park Aquarium & Natural Sciences Center will hold an event to celebrate Groundhog Day on February 2nd, 2018 at 10:30 am. Executive Director Doug Kemper will preside as Poppy the Prairie Dog predicts six more weeks of winter or an early spring. Meet the Aquarium Staff down in the Botanical Gardens and dress for the weather to get in on the fun!
Traditionally, Groundhog Day is held on February 2nd and harkens back to Candlemas in Germany which represented how long and cold the winter would be. According to History.com, the Germans then expanded this tradition to include hibernating groundhogs as weather-forecasters. The tradition was appropriated by news editors and groundhog hunters from Punxsutawney, PA in 1887 who declared Punxsutawney Phil the only true Groundhog Forecaster.
At the Medicine Park Aquarium & Natural Sciences Center, we believe that the Prairie Dog, Poppy, might have special weather-predicting powers. Poppy will make her first annual debut on February 2nd, 2019 and will demonstrate that Punxsutawney Phil is nothin’ compared to Poppy the Prairie Dog!
